Space Squad
Grades: 1 - 4

Prepare for launch in 3…2…1.  Blast off with us this summer by joining the EDMO™ Space Squad! Squad members will work in collaborative teams to develop, design and build a plan to get to and live on the planet of Mars; all while learning what makes up our solar system and the galaxy surrounding us. Campers will design rockets, build space tools and create livable shelters. They’ll also find out how rocket scientists, space engineers and astronauts are planning for the possible colonization of Mars. Join the ranks of these creative problem solvers and come along for an epic journey to Mars and beyond by joining the EDMO™ Space Squad!

21st Century & SEL Skill Focus: Collaboration, Initiative, Problem Solving, Empathy, Critical Thinking, Creativity. Learn more about other skills we build through The EDMO Method™.

Fun Fact. In 2018, there was a 30% increase in Social Emotional Learning (SEL) skills developed for those who attended two weeks of Camp EDMO™ and a 39% increase for returning EDMO™ families over new families!

Sample Projects

Mars Rover

Mars Rover

While exploring Mars, campers will need an all terrain vehicle to navigate the craters, dry riverbeds and craggy rocks that appear all over the surface of the planet. In this activity, campers will design and build a rover to navigate Mars surface and transport them around their colony!

Campers will learn about how rovers and vehicles designed by engineers collect information about the surface of Mars. They will also learn how to design and build a rover of their own and how the force of thrust works to propel vehicles on Earth, as well as on Mars. Our planetary explorers will also compare and contrast how different forces are affected by different atmospheric conditions.

Space Helmet

Space Helmet

The atmosphere of Mars and other planets is much different from that of Earth so for astronauts and explorers to survive and travel to far off worlds they need a way to continually receive oxygen as they would on Earth. In this project our Space Squad members will design and build a space helmet to help them explore the surface of Mars or other worlds!

Campers will learn how engineers design and build space helmets for astronauts to continually receive oxygen while exploring outer space or the surfaces of other planets. Additionally, campers will learn how engineers work in collaborative settings to design and build a prototype.

Mars Colony Habitat

Mars Colony Habitat

Campers will participate in a design challenge and build a successful habitat. Their habitat must include a place to live, a place in which to get food and water, and a place to hide from danger – in this case, a place to escape from the harsh conditions of the red planet!

Campers will learn how to collaborate and successfully solve a problem as a team. Campers will also learn the different kinds of space habitats that space scientists and engineers have been prototyping for humans to use to survive in space, or on other planets.

8:00-9:00AM AM Program

Need to get to work early? We understand. By 8AM our staff is already hard at work helping our campers make new friends, doing arts & crafts projects and playing games.

8:50-9:00AM Drop-Off

Be greeted by name or a high five by a professional staff member…dressed in a mermaid costume or a Viking hat. In a hurry? Pull up and we’ll open the door for you. In no rush? Park your car, come right in and shake your counselor’s fin.

9:00-9:30AM Morning Rally

Although we have a strict “No Nuts” food policy, we have also have a strict “Go Nuts” rally policy. You never know what surprises await when staff and kids take the stage for songs, skits, dress up days, and ridiculous contests.

9:30-10:30AM Game Time

Game Time is all about playing games and having some good ‘ol run-around time. During Game Time, campers will participate in organized recreation activities designed to promote teamwork, collaboration and fun physical activity.

10:30-10:50AM Snack

Active minds lead to hungry bellies! Don’t forget to pack a healthy snack for your camper every morning…with no nuts of course! Remember: If you ordered a delicious lunch, you automatically receive a healthy morning snack!

10:50-11:50AM Enrichment 1

During enrichment stations, campers really get into the weekly theme and curriculum. Campers are introduced to the weekly subject and concepts, learn new skills and facts, and design, create and build daily and weekly projects.

11:50AM-12:25PM Lunch

Lunch available at your location?  It’s a snap to add a delicious lunch each day! Just click/check the lunch box on your enrollment form and a quality lunch will be delivered to camp daily. Packing you own lunch? Please just do not bring any products that contain: cashews, almonds, brazil nuts, pine nuts, walnuts or heaven forbid, the “Mother of All Nut Allergies”—the peanut.

12:30-1:30PM Enrichment 2

During enrichment stations, campers really get into the weekly theme and curriculum. Campers are introduced to the weekly subject and concepts, learn new skills and facts, and design, create and build daily and weekly projects.

1:35-2:35PM Team Time

In Team Time, we focus on team building and community. We get to know our teammates’ names, meet our Kimochi friends, create team names and cheers, and play the EDMO Vibe Game™.

2:40-3:00PM Closing Rally

Our Afternoon rally ends the day in an upbeat way. This gives staff  a chance to wrap up the day, make announcements for the days to follow and give SNAPS!

3:00-3:15PM Pick-Up

Pull up or walk up, whichever you fancy. Either way we’ll make a point to let you know something special about your child’s day. Look out for our daily email from the Camp Director detailing the activities at your camp location, along with a reminder to visit EDMO At Home to see what to look forward to tomorrow and suggested activities, books, websites, museum exhibitions, and more ways to keep the curiosity going.

3:15-6:00PM PM Extended Day, PM Snack & Free Play

Need a little more time in your day? Our PM Extended Day Program is a great option. While you’re away, campers can enjoy a little more free time with each other and staff. They’ll also have the option to spend time in the “Hang Time” room with access to music, games, computers, and maker supplies.  PM Extended Day goes from 3 PM – 6 PM but parents can pick up whenever works for them…but no later than 6 PM please! Our staff needs to get home too.

“My middle son has always been slow to warm and hasn't attended a summer program that he has wanted to return to except for EDMO! He has loved his counselor - he has been engaged, feels seen and supported and has had a blast. Many thanks!”
