Roblox Game Jam

Grades: 5th-8th

All Programs

Get the real game jam experience and bring your Roblox ideas to life!  A game jam is a kind of “hackathon” for video games, where a small team of developers challenge themselves to design and create a game in a very short period of time. In the game jam spirit of rapid prototyping and design iteration, campers will have the opportunity to build a Roblox game of their own invention. We’ll begin with some quick tutorials to learn the ropes of Roblox Studio, including object modeling, terrain generation and coding for common game mechanics like power-ups, hazards and goals. From there, campers will work in pairs or small groups to go through the complete game jam process — brainstorm, outline, build, code, and play test.

21st Century & SEL Skill Focus: Initiative, Collaboration, Responsibility, Problem Solving, Empathy. Learn more about other skills we build through The EDMO Method®.

Take a look at your camper's daily schedule below, under sample projects!

Sample Projects

Build a 3D World

Build a 3D World

Campers will use Roblox Studio’s terrain editor to generate and sculpt a landscape for their game world. With the foundation built, campers will then create and customize all kinds of in-game structures, interactable objects and decorations.

Campers will learn the fundamentals of 3D modeling, starting with the more “sculpting” style of the terrain editor and then moving on to solid modeling concepts like rotation, scale, union, negation, and more.

Program Custom Mechanics

Program Custom Mechanics

Once the game’s 3D environment is built, campers will use the Lua programming language to define the rules and mechanics of their games.

Campers will learn the fundamentals of computer science; from functions and variables to loops, conditionals, data types, and more.

Complete the Game Jam

Complete the Game Jam

After a few days of guided tutorials, campers will be free to invent and build a Roblox game of their own design. Instructors will then continue to guide and teach each group on topics and techniques relevant to their custom project ideas.

In addition to the continued development of their 3D modeling and programming skills, campers will learn about and practice 21st Century and SEL skills like initiative, communication, collaboration, task management, and goal-setting.

Drop-Off
8:50-9:00AM

Be greeted by name or a high five by a professional staff member…dressed in a mermaid costume or a Viking hat. In a hurry? Pull up and we’ll open the door for you. In no rush? Park your car, come right in and shake your counselor’s fin.

Opening Huddle
9:00-9:30AM

Your morning Huddle will get your gears spinning and your thoughts pumping.  Get to know your fellow campers and jump start the day with games, high fives and jokes.

Lab 1

Pick-Up
3:00-3:15PM

Have your camper check themselves out and/or pull up or walk up, whichever you fancy. Either way we’ll make a point to let you know something special about your child’s day. Look out for our daily email from the Camp Director detailing the activities at your camp location, along with a reminder to visit EDMO At Home to see what to look forward to tomorrow and suggested activities, books, websites, museum exhibitions, and more ways to keep the curiosity going.

After Care, PM Snack & Free Play

Need a little more time in your day? Our After Care Program is a great option. While you’re away, campers can enjoy a little more free time with each other and staff. After Care goes from 3 pm – 6 pm but parents can pick up whenever works for them…but no later than 6 pm please! Our staff needs to get home too.

“My daughter was so proud to show her Roblox game to the family. We are very proud of her too! She also shared how she and her lab partner complemented each other in working on the project together.”
