Roblox Game Jam

Grades: 5-8

All Programs

Get the real game jam experience and bring your Roblox ideas to life! A game jam is a kind of “hackathon” for video games, where a small team of developers challenge themselves to design and create a game in a very short period of time. In the game jam spirit of rapid prototyping and design iteration, campers will have the opportunity to build a Roblox game of their own invention in just one week. We’ll begin with some quick tutorials to learn the ropes of Roblox Studio, including object modeling, terrain generation and coding for common game mechanics like power-ups, hazards and goals. From there, campers will go through the complete game jam process — brainstorm, outline, build, code, and playtest.

21st Century & SEL Skill Focus: Initiative, Collaboration, Responsibility, Problem Solving, Empathy. Learn more about other skills we build through The EDMO Method®.

Take a look at your camper's daily schedule below, under sample projects!

Sample Projects

Build a 3D World

Build a 3D World

Campers will use Roblox Studio’s terrain editor to generate and sculpt a landscape for their game world. Once the foundation is built, campers will then create and customize all kinds of in-game structures, interactable objects and decorations.

Campers will learn the fundamentals of 3D modeling; starting with the more “sculpting” style of the terrain editor and then moving on to solid modeling concepts like rotation, scale, union, negation, and more.

Program Custom Mechanics

Program Custom Mechanics

Once the game’s 3D environment is built, campers will use the Lua programming language to define the rules and mechanics of their games.

Campers will learn the fundamentals of computer science; from functions and variables to loops, conditionals, data types, and more.

Complete the Game Jam

Complete the Game Jam

After a few days of guided tutorials, campers will be free to invent and build a Roblox game of their own design. Instructors will continue to guide and teach each group on topics and techniques relevant to their custom project ideas.

In addition to the continued development of their 3D modeling and programming skills, campers will learn about and practice 21st Century and SEL skills like initiative, communication, collaboration, task management, and goal-setting.

Sample Schedule

  • A Day in the Life...

Some kids thrive on routines and harmony. Others not so much. Good news! We’ve found the secret recipe that works for all EDMO campers!

Pro 1st Half Day Schedule

Check In
9:30 AM (PST)

To ensure your child’s safety and privacy, we have a moderated check-in process that takes approximately 10-15 minutes. As children log in, they’ll be greeted and asked their name and where they’re from!

Opening Rally
9:40 AM (PST)

You never know what surprises await when staff and kids get together. At rally, we’ll share songs, skits, jokes, and ridiculous contests. We might even dress up!

Enrichment 1
9:50 AM (PST)

During enrichment stations, campers really get into the weekly theme and curriculum. Campers are introduced to the weekly subject and concepts, learn new skills and facts, and design, create and build daily and/or weekly projects.

Break
10:50 AM (PST)

Everybody needs a break now and then. This the perfect time for campers to stretch, go the restroom or grab a quick snack before they wind up their morning or afternoon of camp.

Enrichment 2
11:05 AM (PST)

During enrichment stations, campers really get into the weekly theme and curriculum. Campers are introduced to the weekly subject and concepts, learn new skills and facts, and design, create and build daily and/or weekly projects.

Hang Time/Real Time
11:45 AM (PST)

Each session, EDMO Pro campers will have 15-20 minutes of team building and mindfulness practice. During this time, campers will get to know each other and learn techniques for managing their emotions during this time.

Closing Huddle
11:55 AM (PST)

Closing Huddle is your daily wrap up! This is the part of the day when you can really let your campy side out with songs, skits and improv! Make sure you save all of your projects before you’re rolling on the floor laughing! #roll

End of Day
12:00 PM (PST)

We know, it’s hard to leave behind all that camp fun. Don’t worry, we’ll all be coming back again tomorrow.
