Roblox: Game Coder
Grades: 5-8

Campers, build your very own characters, worlds and mini-games in Roblox!  Roblox is a popular computer program which allows users to build and play in a 3D game world, adding their own game rules using a coding language called Lua.  Campers will be able to create their own 3D game objects and environments and will then learn the fundamentals of computer programming to bring their custom mini-games to life.

21st Century & SEL Skill Focus:  Problem Solving, Collaboration, Initiative, Responsibility.  Learn more about other skills we build through The EDMO Method™.

Please note that campers work in pairs or teams and share computers. This allows for a more collaborative process, as well as more comprehensive and innovative projects. Plus, it’s more fun!

Sample Projects

Build a Race Car

Build a Race Car

To begin creating a racing game, campers will combine primitive objects like boxes and cylinders to create a complex race car.  They will even define things like axles and motors to allow the car to drive.

Campers will learn about manipulating 3D objects in a 3D modeling program.

Bring Your Game to Life

Bring Your Game to Life

Once their basic objects and environments are built in Roblox, campers will begin to use Lua code to define the basic controls for their game.  In the case of a racing game, this includes acceleration, braking and steering.

Campers will learn fundamental computer science concepts, such as variables, functions, if statements, and loops.

Create Your Own World

Create Your Own World

As campers become more proficient with world design and coding, the sky’s the limit.  Campers will customize and expand their game worlds to all kind of game genres and styles.

Campers will work with their partner to plan and construct a game world of their own design, practicing collaboration, critical thinking, organization, and more.

“This is my son's 6th summer at EDMO...Last week at EDMO he told me it was the best camp week he had ever had, and this week he said it was even better! I asked him what was so good about it, and he said he was making really good friends. (He's also loving the coding.) That really makes a Mom's heart happy. Thanks for providing such a positive, nurturing and educational environment. ”
