Minecraft Mod Coder
Grades: 5 - 8

Hack Minecraft’s code and make the game your own!  In our Minecraft Mod Coder program, campers will learn to use Java code to create a Minecraft Forge mod.  A “mod” (short for “modification”) is a kind of plugin that can add all new game content to Minecraft. Campers will learn the fundamentals of Java coding as they design and program their own mod, allowing them to invent their own items, blocks, tools, armor, crafting recipes, and more. Ever wanted a suit of armor made from obsidian? A pickaxe that summons lightning bolts? An “ultra-snowball” that can freeze a whole lake in an instant? Jump into Java coding and turn your Minecraft imagination into a reality!

21st Century & SEL Skill Focus: Collaboration, Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, Organizational Skills, Creativity. Learn more about other skills we build through The EDMO Method™.

Fun Fact. In 2018, there was a 30% increase in Social Emotional Learning (SEL) skills developed for those who attended two weeks of Camp EDMO™ and a 39% increase for returning EDMO™ families over new families!

Please note that campers work in pairs or teams and share computers. This allows for a more collaborative process, as well as more comprehensive and innovative projects. Plus, it’s more fun!

Sample Projects

Custom Blocks

Custom Blocks

Invent your own Minecraft block!  Campers will define all of their custom block’s characteristics through code; including the block’s name, texture, mining speed, blast resistance, and brightness.

Campers will be learning about constructor methods, using the parameters to define the statistics and special features of their new objects.

Magic Wand

Magic Wand

Turn a plain ol’ stick into a “magic wand”!  Campers will define what happens when an item is used.  For example, they will be able to transform the type of a targeted block, summon an animal, create explosions, and more.

Campers will be introduced to the concept of event-driven programming, as well as conditional statements.

New Dimension

New Dimension

Invent a whole new dimension!  Using Java to create a whole new class and define its fields and methods, campers will create an alternate reality inside Minecraft.  Want the dimension to have a green sky? Purple trees? Rolling fields of gold? Jagged peaks of obsidian that reach far past the clouds?  With Java code, it’s all up to you!

Campers will learn how to create a new Java class and change its fields and methods.  They will also learn more about data types and hexadecimal numbers.
