Insect Investigators

Grades: Pre-K-K

All Programs

Put your entomology hat on and flutter into a week of Insects! Our Junior investigators will study critters that crawl, burrow and fly. Campers will observe and make art to better understand insect life cycles, bug habitats and adaptations they have made to live in their environments. Campers will take a close look into the life cycle of butterflies and cicadas, the kaleidoscope effect of insect eyes and some predatory insects, like the wasp.

21st Century & SEL Skill Focus: Responsibility, Communication, Empathy, Collaboration. Learn more about other skills we build through The EDMO Method®.

Take a look at your camper's daily schedule below, under sample projects!

Sample Projects

Fly Eye Model

Fly Eye Model

Campers will create a model of a compound eye using straws and a cardboard tube. Campers will explore camp with their new insect vision!

Campers will learn about the compound eyes of insects, focusing on how the multiple units of a compound eye create a completely different view than that of human eyes.

Honey Bee Habitat

Honey Bee Habitat

Campers will use the classic game “Ball in a Cup” to demonstrate a bee habitat. They will show how bees collect pollen and nectar to create honey.

Campers will learn what a pollinator is, where bees live and how bees collect nectar to make their delicious food, honey.

Bubble Print Butterfly

Bubble Print Butterfly

Campers will create butterfly crafts that illustrate their vibrant colors by making their very own print. Campers will use bubbles, watercolor and paper to produce their art.

Campers will learn the stages of life of the butterfly and how they go through the process of metamorphosis to become vibrant winged fliers.

Sample Schedule

  • A Day in the Life...

Some kids thrive on routines and harmony. Others not so much. Good news! We’ve found the secret recipe that works for all EDMO campers!

Junior 1st Half Day Schedule

Check In
9:30 AM (PST)

To ensure your child’s safety and privacy, we have a moderated check-in process that takes approximately 10-15 minutes. As children log in, they’ll be greeted and asked their name and where they’re from!

Opening Rally
9:40 AM (PST)

You never know what surprises await when staff and kids get together. At rally, we’ll share songs, skits, jokes, and ridiculous contests. We might even dress up!

Enrichment 1
9:50 AM (PST)

During enrichment stations, campers really get into the weekly theme and curriculum. Campers are introduced to the weekly subject and concepts, learn new skills and facts, and design, create and build daily and/or weekly projects.

Team Time
10:20 AM (PST)

In Team Time, we focus on team building and community. We get to know our teammates names, meet our Kimochis’ friends and create group names and cheers. We also take time to strengthen our SEL skills and focus on the EDMO RECIPE of Responsibility, Empathy, Collaboration, Initiative, Problem Solving, and Emotion Management. Every day is different and we may do this through literature, various methods of meditation, group activities and/or positive vibes. We work on being curious, courageous and kind HUMANS.

Break
10:50 AM (PST)

Everybody needs a break now and then. This the perfect time for campers to stretch, go the restroom or grab a quick snack before they wind up their morning or afternoon of camp.

Rec 1
11:05 AM (PST)

Just because we’re online doesn’t mean that campers can’t get some physical exercise as well. During our Rec periods, campers will get up and moving with stretching, yoga, jump roping, silly dance moves, and more!

Enrichment 2
11:20 AM (PST)

During enrichment stations, campers really get into the weekly theme and curriculum. Campers are introduced to the weekly subject and concepts, learn new skills and facts, and design, create and build daily and/or weekly projects.

Closing Rally
11:50 AM (PST)

Whether morning or afternoon, our closing rally ends the day in an upbeat way. This gives staff a chance to wrap up the day, make announcements for the days to follow and give SNAPS!

End of Day
12:00 PM (PST)

We know, it’s hard to leave behind all that camp fun. Don’t worry, we’ll all be coming back again tomorrow.
