Geocache Dash

Grades: 5th-8th

All Programs

Hunt for hidden treasure and log your finds in this week of EDMO® Geocaching! Campers will use smart devices to locate hidden caches in their midst. They will use GPS navigation to reach the cache and then use their powers of observation to locate each cache and sign its logbook. Campers will then come up with clues to hide their own caches in a creative spot that will endure the elements. This week finishes with a race to find the most caches in a collaborative team effort!

This theme may be run in a park or out of an indoor facility, with walking excursions on the property or in the surrounding area. This nature theme also has a Guest Presenter at the site each week. Take a look at our sample presenter schedule for Summer 2020.

Sample Projects

Finding Caches

Finding Caches

In this sleuthing activity, campers will use GPS navigation to locate hidden geocaches in their surrounding area. They will combine their observation skills with clues provided by other Geocachers to locate, log and sign the logbook of caches that are hidden in their midst.

Campers will learn how to navigate using GPS coordinates and how to locate hidden geocaches. They will think critically about places the cache might be hidden.

Placing Caches

Placing Caches

Campers will think creatively about a theme for their caches and clues to lead others to them. They will then build caches that include logbooks and are contained in element proof vessels. Next, they will scout a good place to hide their cache, secure it in the hiding place and finally input its GPS coordinates so it can be found by other cachers.

Campers will learn how to think creatively as well as pragmatically. They will need to think about several factors, like weather and visibility to non-cachers, a thematic topic that is interesting, and a series of related caches with individual variations.

Cache Dash

Cache Dash

Campers will form teams and connect clues to see who can find other teams’ caches in the shortest amount of time. Campers will have placed caches earlier in the week. The first team back to the starting point after finding and logging all caches in the series will be declared the winner.

Campers will learn how to work cooperatively and collaboratively and to be efficient and find the caches quickly. They will also practice creative thinking and GPS navigation skills.
