Escape Room Engineers

Grades: 5th-8th

All Programs

Escape this room! Campers will learn about different types of puzzles and the science of cryptography as they build their very own escape room. They will study historical puzzles used in the past, investigate modern puzzles common today, and postulate about puzzles in the future! In an exciting conclusion to the week, campers will design their very own escape the room challenge using a combination of puzzles.

21st Century & SEL Skill Focus: Collaboration, Initiative, Problem Solving, Empathy, Critical Thinking, Creativity. Learn more about other skills we build through The EDMO Method®.

Sample Projects

Scytale Cipher

Scytale Cipher

Campers will construct a cryptic message using a Scytale Cipher. Made famous by the Spartans of Ancient Greece, the Scytale Cipher is a two piece physical puzzle used to interpret a cryptic message. Campers will first solve the puzzle to get the hidden message and then construct a version of their own.

Campers will learn to think in a different way when they learn how to decode a message using a Scytale Cipher. This physical puzzle incorporates tangible clues that need to be assembled by hand in order to make sense of them.

Caesar Cipher

Caesar Cipher

Campers will use simple materials and a logical thought pattern to find a hidden message using a classic frameshift puzzle called a Caesar Cipher. Starting with a scrambled ciphertext, campers will find the meaning in the message by uncovering the appropriate frameshift to solve the cipher and decode the message.

Things are not always as they appear! Despite a lack of meaning at first glance, campers will learn how to think about something in a different way and learn how to decode a message using a designated frameshift.

Cryptic Messages

Cryptic Messages

Campers will use a variety of tools to help them solve puzzles and escape the room. These puzzles include using magnets to find clues, solving riddles to open locks, collecting parts of a circuit to illuminate solutions, and using everything from shapes, colors, numbers, and letters to solve puzzles.

Campers will learn how to think critically and become more solution oriented as they develop creative problem solving skills. There are often many ways to go about solving a problem. As they work together collaboratively, campers will realize that there are many ways of thinking about solutions and that other people can have really good ideas!
