Entomology Exploration

Grades: 5-8

All Programs

Just because you’re home, doesn’t mean you can’t explore! Join us to discover small creatures that have a BIG environmental impact! In Entomology Exploration, campers will learn about different species of bugs and insects and can go on their own (while maintaining shelter-in-place rules) to collect specimens and post photographs to iNaturalist—a citizen science project and online social network for nature research. Working with scientists and students from around the world, campers will identify arthropod species and document habitat conditions that influence our planet’s health.

21st Century & SEL Skill Focus: Collaboration, Initiative, Problem Solving, Empathy, Critical Thinking, Creativity. Learn more about other skills we build through The EDMO Method®.

Take a look at your camper's daily schedule below, under sample projects!

Sample Projects

Engineer an Arthropod

Engineer an Arthropod

Campers will create a brand new bug! They will consider what the bug looks like and how it survives in the wild.

Campers will learn about different bug species and the essential characteristics that define arthropods. Campers will also learn how shared characteristics can help determine which bugs are related and which are not.

Become a Citizen Scientist

Become a Citizen Scientist

Campers will actively contribute to scientific research about the area in which they live. They will identify arthropod species and the health of the environments where those species are found.

Campers will learn how to identify arthropod species and how to use the iNaturalist app. Campers will also learn how arthropods affect the environments in which they live and how they contribute to the overall health of our world’s ecosystems.

Tools of the Trade

Tools of the Trade

Campers will be introduced to the different ways scientists collect specimens for analysis. They will then collect bug specimens themselves, using different tools and methods that real scientists use for collection.

Campers will learn how to collect and analyze specimens they find in the field. They will also be taught how to document their collections.
