Curious Chemists
Grades: 1 - 4

It’s time to mix things up!  This week, curious chemists will use hands-on experiments to explore physical and chemical reactions.  Campers will learn about atoms, matter and energy while creating colorful crystals, amazing acidic indicators and exothermic eruptions.  Our entire world is made of chemicals, let’s get ready to spark campers’ curiosity and learn all about them.

21st Century & SEL Skill Focus: Initiative, Responsibility, Problem Solving.  Learn more about other skills we build through The EDMO Method™.

Fun Fact. In 2018, there was a 30% increase in Social Emotional Learning (SEL) skills developed for those who attended two weeks of Camp EDMO™ and a 39% increase for returning EDMO™ families over new families!

Sample Projects

Candy Atom (1-2)

Candy Atom (1-2)

Campers will create their own colorful atoms out of candy! Gumdrop neutrons, sugary protons and marshmallow electrons will show campers the basic anatomy of atoms.

Campers will learn that atoms are the building blocks of all matter in the universe.  Campers will also learn how different atoms are structured and what they are made of.

 Mystery Crystals (3-4)

Mystery Crystals (3-4)

Campers will set up and observe a mystery crystallization reaction over the course of the week and try to figure out what the chemicals involved in the reaction, or reagents, could be.  What chemicals are crystallizing on the wick?

Campers will learn about solutions, molecules and change of state.  They will also experience first hand how scientists use reactions to explore different aspects of chemicals to determine what they are.

Exothermic Eruptions (All)

Exothermic Eruptions (All)

It’s time to erupt! In this exciting project, campers will mix together common household chemicals to create an exciting exothermic reaction they can touch and explore!

Campers will learn about heat energy and how it can be absorbed or released by some chemical reactions.  They will use example reactions to study how temperature is related to energy. Our EDMO Max campers will take things one step further and investigate how energy helps atoms bond!
