Cartoon Coders
Grades: 1 - 2

Code your own animated cartoons!  In Cartoon Coders, campers will use ScratchJr., a kid-friendly, “drag and drop” coding software for tablets, to design and build fun cartoon scenes and skits, complete with custom art and sound effects.  As they complete their projects, campers will be introduced to the basics of computer programming and explore concepts like functions, loops, events, and more.

21st Century & SEL Skill Focus: Creativity, Problem Solving, Initiative, Emotion Management, Collaboration, Communication. Learn more about other skills we build through The EDMO Method™.

Please note that campers work in pairs or teams and share computers. This allows for a more collaborative process, as well as more comprehensive and innovative projects. Plus, it’s more fun!

Sample Projects

Dance Party

Dance Party

As an introductory project, campers will create a simple animated scene with two or more characters moving, dancing, singing, chatting, or anything else they can think of.

To complete their project, campers will explore many of the core coding blocks in ScratchJr, including “Move”, “Rotate”, “Speak”, “Play Sound”, and more.  Campers will practice timing their actions and using different event types to trigger the characters’ actions.

Navigate a Maze

Navigate a Maze

Campers will draw a maze and then program a character in ScratchJr. to navigate its way through it.

Campers will learn how to use the art editor in ScratchJr. to draw custom character images and level backgrounds. Campers will also practice using the motion controls in a more precise manor, in order to safely navigate the maze.

Create Your Own Story

Create Your Own Story

Near the end of the camp week, campers will be challenged to invent a totally original cartoon scene or story!

Campers will build their coding, artistic and story-writing skills as they design and build an original ScratchJr. project.

They’ll also have the option to spend time in the “Hang Time” room with access to music, games, computers, and maker supplies.  PM Extended Day goes from 3 PM – 6 PM but parents can pick up whenever works for them…but no later than 6 PM please! Our staff needs to get home too.

“We’re now on our third week and yesterday, my kids came home and told me how my son raised his hand and volunteered to stand in front of everyone to share a joke with the whole camp. My son was so happy and proud when he came home. It was a huge step for him! I could tell that the counselors pay attention to each individual child and they really try to set up a very encouraging environment for the kids. I’m very impressed!”
