Botany Bonanza

Grades: 1st-2nd & 3rd-4th

All Programs

Watch summer bloom in this botanical exploration! This week is all about unearthing the plant kingdom, its various species and the essential roles that they play in our larger ecosystem. Campers will investigate plant structures and why they have them, the ways that animals (including humans) use plants and how to identify certain plants by sight. Campers will record their observations in a field journal so they can share their new nature knowledge with family and friends!

This theme may be run in a park or out of an indoor facility, with walking excursions on the property or in the surrounding area. This nature theme also has a Guest Presenter at the site each week. Take a look at our sample presenter schedule for Summer 2020.

21st Century & SEL Skill Focus: Responsibility, Communication, Problem Solving, Critical Thinking, Initiative, Collaboration. Learn more about other skills we build through The EDMO Method®

Sample Projects

Natural Brushes

Natural Brushes

Campers will source plants to construct natural paintbrushes. They’ll also test how different foliage creates different lines and patterns.

Campers will learn how to compare and contrast the behavior of brushes by watching the different materials interact with the paint and paper. Campers will also learn how to “Leave No Trace” by respectfully using plants from nature.

Exploding Seed Pods

Exploding Seed Pods

Campers will create a model for seed dispersal. They will collaborate in teams to design seed pods that will compete to disperse their seed the furthest.

Campers will learn about seed dispersal and a plant’s ability to launch their seeds a good distance away from the parent plant.

Terrific Terrariums

Terrific Terrariums

Campers will build structures for their own succulent terrariums. Campers will apply what they are learning about plant survival to create a happy home for their very own plant.

Campers will learn principles of engineering and physics, then combine them with their own artistic vision. Campers will create their own hospitable environment for a hearty plant to fulfill a design challenge.

“The kids built a complex community together out of sticks, rocks, leaves, and any other items they could find at the park. They kept building and adding to it all week. It was beautiful to see them working together so effortlessly!”
