Soar into the field of ornithological research! This week, campers will join the Science Action Club, powered by the California Academy of Sciences, to collect data and learn all about birds. Campers become citizen scientists and ornithologists (bird scientists) and explore feathers, flight and the features that make birds unique. Using field research tools and smart technology, campers will identify local birds and investigate environmental changes that impact bird behavior. They’ll also submit bird counts to eBird, a citizen science project from the Cornell Lab of Ornithologym that will help scientists better understand these important species.

21st Century & SEL Skill Focus: Collaboration, Empathy, Communication, Responsibility, Creativity

Fun Fact. In 2018, there was a 30% increase in Social Emotional Learning (SEL) skills developed for those who attended two weeks of Camp EDMO™ and a 39% increase for returning EDMO™ families over new families!

California Academy of Sciences

The California Academy of Sciences mission is to explore, explain and protect the natural world. This mission extends to all corners of the institution; from a research expedition in the highlands of Papua New Guinea, to a teacher training program in a California classroom, to an interactive game on the museum exhibit floor.

Sample Projects

Citizen Science Data Collection

Citizen Science Data Collection

Campers will be observing birds at their local park, counting the amount and types of species they see, and submitting their observations and data into eBird, a citizen science tool.

Campers will gain real time experience as field scientists and will learn how to collect data and document research. Campers will also learn how tech is integrated into field science as they learn to use two apps to identify and collect data on the birds they see.

Posting to eBird

Posting to eBird

Campers will document birds to contribute to scientific research across the globe as they upload lists of their bird to an app developed by the Cornell Ornithology lab called eBird. eBird allows scientists to collect data from citizens to help them understand bird habitats and migration patterns.

Campers will learn how technology and nature can work together to unite scientist and learners! They’ll also learn how lay citizens can contribute to greater scientific endeavors and the impact all people have on the continuation of field science and data collection.

Build a Bird

Build a Bird

Campers will identify different species of birds by looking at features like beak shape, feet, feathers, color, and size. Campers will then design and make their own bird!

Campers will learn how to identify and analyze the shape of beaks, feet and feathers and how to look at clues about what birds eat and how they behave. Campers will learn how minor differences in physical features can be major keys to identifying a species of bird.

Field Trips

We work to curate exciting and diverse field trips that align with each weekly theme! Our Field Trip Instructors support our enrichment curriculum off site by bridging concepts of the week with experiences in the field.

Take a look at some of the Field Trips that our EDMO Pro (5th-8th) grade campers might be taking!

9:30-10:30AM Lab 1

During this enrichment lab time, campers really get into the weekly theme and curriculum. Campers delve into the weekly subject, learn new skills and design and create weekly projects.

10:30-10:45AM Snack

Active minds lead to hungry bellies! Don’t forget to pack a healthy snack for your camper every morning…with no nuts of course! Remember: If you ordered a delicious lunch you automatically receive a healthy morning snack!

10:45-11:15AM Real Time

Each day EDMO Pro campers will have 20-30 minutes of team and leadership building.

11:15AM-12:15PM Lab 2

During this enrichment lab time, campers really get into the weekly theme and curriculum. Campers delve into the weekly subject, learn new skills and design and create weekly projects.

12:15-12:45PM Lunch

Lunch available at your location?  It’s a snap to add a delicious lunch each day! Just click/check the lunch box on your enrollment form and a quality lunch will be delivered to camp daily.
