Backyard Biology
Grades: Pre-K - 4

There’s a whole world in our own backyards!  This week, campers will become field researchers and make observations, gather data and design experiments about the natural world. All of our backyard biologists will create botanical illustrations, make topographic maps and build animal habitats.  Their freshly-honed skills will help them discover amazing things about the behavior of birds, bugs, bats, squirrels, and more; above and below the ground! As our cities grow, our human habitats can make it hard for animals to live. This week, campers will work together to figure out how to make our parks a place where humans and animals can both feel at home!

21st Century & SEL Skill Focus:  Empathy, Responsibility, Problem Solving. Learn more about other skills we build through The EDMO Method.

Fun Fact. In 2018, there was a 30% increase in Social Emotional Learning (SEL) skills developed for those who attended two weeks of Camp EDMO™ and a 39% increase for returning EDMO™ families over new families!

Sample Projects

Botanical Prints (K-1)

Botanical Prints (K-1)

Campers will use crayon rubbing to create beautiful botanical prints of leaves. They will go on a hike to find leaves in the park and use their prints to explore the shapes and structures of different types of leaves.

Campers will learn about plant anatomy, photosynthesis and the roles leaves play in plant health. They will also explore plant diversity and learn the names of some common plants in the parks.

Seed Dispersal Design Challenge (2-4)

Seed Dispersal Design Challenge (2-4)

Campers will look at different methods of seed dispersal and design their own seed dispersal mechanism for some California native wildflower seeds!

Campers will learn how seeds sprout into plants, how they are dispersed and why this process is important for plants to grow. They will also explore the concepts of lift, thrust, drag, weight, and buoyancy as they relate to seed dispersal mechanisms.

Bug Hotel (K-4)

Bug Hotel (K-4)

Campers will create suitable arthropod habitats out of human-made materials.  Campers will decide if they want to make homes for solitary bees, spiders, butterflies, or more helpful invertebrates in the park!

Campers will learn about the aspects of a healthy arthropod habitat and familiarize themselves with the arthropod diversity in the parks. They will also learn about some of the important roles arthropods play in California ecosystems, some of the threats facing arthropods, and what humans can do to protect them.

Field Trips

We work to curate exciting and diverse field trips that align with each weekly theme! Our Field Trip Instructors support our enrichment curriculum off site by bridging concepts of the week with experiences in the field.

Take a look at some of the Field Trips that our EDMO Prime (1st-2nd) and EDMO Max (3rd-4th) campers might be taking!

“It has been wonderful to see my son excited every day to go to camp! He comes home singing songs, dancing, and playing games, and he also has enjoyed building things on his own, struggling to figure out how to make them work himself and thrilled when he solves the puzzle. ”
