3D Animation
Grades: 5-8

Using the popular (and free!) 3D modeling program called “Blender”, campers will learn how to create and animate their own 3D characters, props and scenes.  Campers will start by combining basic 3D objects to create more complex structures.  We’ll then learn how to set these models in motion, covering core animation concepts such as frame rate, keyframes, armatures, extrapolation, and more.

21st Century & SEL Skill Focus:  Initiative, Collaboration, Problem Solving, Empathy. Learn more about other skills we build through The EDMO Method™.

Please note that campers work in pairs or teams and share computers. This allows for a more collaborative process, as well as more comprehensive and innovative projects. Plus, it’s more fun!

Sample Projects

Animate a Robot

Animate a Robot

Campers will create a robot out of blocks, cylinders, spheres, and other primitive shapes.  They will then make their robot parts move around in a simple pattern, like walking or karate-chopping.

Campers will be introduced to the concept of keyframes. They will also work with object parenting, to keep the robot’s parts connected.

“Clay” Character

“Clay” Character

Campers will create a cartoonish character by shaping a clay-like mesh model and adding an armature, which acts like the character’s “skeleton”.  Campers will then animate the skeleton to bring their character to life.

Campers will learn about building, configuring and animating a 3D armature.

Dominos and Cannonballs

Dominos and Cannonballs

Campers will explore the physics simulator in Blender, which allows them to apply gravity and collision handling to objects in their scene.  With this simulator, campers will be able to create and then topple a digital structure in a complex, realistic way.

Campers will learn about physics concepts such as mass, acceleration and elasticity, and how to simulate them in a 3D modeling program.

“My daughter loves EDMO. I can't express it enough. She wants to be the first one there and the last one to get picked up . She brags about the counselors and all the creative things they do daily. I don't know how this camp is different from others but however you all train your counselors and come up with creative things for these children, continue it! ”
