Our EDMO Coaches focus on the whole person. Each session balances expertise in your chosen subject with our EDMO Method®. Youth deepen their knowledge in a subject while being coached on their personal development — at the same time! Each Coach sets their own availablity and curriculum. You can choose academic subjects like Math, English and Science or choose hobbies like knitting, animation and drumming. EDMO Coaches are talented, smart, passionate and kind people who are ready to build meaningful mentor relationships today.

Online Safety: We federally and state background check all staff. Coaches complete an EDMO online training program prior to teaching.

Homework Coach (K-4th)

Homework is crucial to helping students review and make sense of their own learning throughout the school day. In each session, students will receive 1:1 assistance and support with homework in each subject area. Our coaches are prepared to support students in literacy, math or any subject area where homework is given. Support can vary based on grade levels and homework given to students.

Robert Sanlis

Schedule Session

Robert is very excited to be joining the EDMO Coach Team! He earned two degrees from UCSB and has an extensive professional background in education with a specialty in music education. He has been playing music for over twenty years and teaching music for half a decade in both classroom settings and individual instruction. He believes that music education provides children with tools they can use to better understand their emotions and world around them. Robert also has experience in teaching academic subjects in a variety of topics including math, writing, history, and biology. Robert is very passionate about education and can’t wait to start teaching you!

Ken is thrilled to have the opportunity to inspire and challenge young minds while rocking the EDMO vibe! He is currently a sapling among the trees at Stanford University who hopes to one day grow into a (tall) civil engineer and city planner. On the side, he serves as the news director at campus radio station KZSU 90.1FM. He has spent the past two summers at EDMO’s Alameda site, most recently as a Pro Maker Instructor, but his dedication to working with students began early on as the founder of a local mentoring program. Ken’s passion is guiding students along their quest in discovering their inner genius by leveraging their strengths and interests. You can often catch Ken in his natural habitat on board a city bus, or on the air talking about the news and interviewing fascinating people!

Sydney Segal

Sydney has been with Camp EDMO for over 12 years –– as a camper for seven, then a leader-in-training, counselor, and now… an EDMO Coach! She is currently a rising sophomore at UC Berkeley, with an intended major in Media Studies and minors in Journalism and Spanish. Aside from her passions for working with children, writing, and language, Sydney is an avid traveler, volleyball player, artist, and tutor. In fact, when she’s not editing her friends’ essays or leading repeat-after-me songs at summer camp, you’ll likely find Sydney at JoAnn’s Fabrics, passing a volleyball around, or planning her next trip abroad. Though learning can surely be difficult sometimes, Sydney hopes to inspire the same enthusiasm in kids for education and trying new things that she too developed at EDMO.

Valeria Vallejo

Valeria is currently majoring in Computer Science at San Francisco State University. As the oldest in her family, she has always been the source of entertainment for her younger siblings and cousins. Last summer, she worked as an EDMO Tech Instructor and absolutely loved how curious all of the campers were about computers and programming. Along with tech, she also loves learning about different cultures and languages, especially through art and literature. She hopes that she can one day make foreign languages and cultures more accessible and exciting for children through programming games and websites.

Christopher Hatch

Chris is a credentialed teacher with experience in teaching 8th, 4th, and 1st grade! He is currently teaching 4th grade and strongly believes in working with students to not only build their academic skills but their social-emotional skills as well. Chris was an EDMO camp instructor last summer and loved working with such passionate and innovate students. Some of his passions include music (his favorite instruments to play are trombone and banjo), scuba diving, metal working, and hiking with his wife. He is excited to start meeting new students to help them grow in their passions!

Kim Gardner

Kim has been coaching and passionately teaching a wide range of subjects for over 10 years. She holds a BA in Psychology from CSU Sacramento and received her MA in Behavior Analysis from Capella University. She taught special needs students and their families for four years before exploring life as the art instructor KimChi! She is passionate about helping youth develop their critical thinking skills and self confidence through her teaching and tutoring.

Tina Barrentine

Tina Barrentine’s favorite sound in the whole world is “Aha!” when a concept finally clicks in the mind of a child. She loves one-on-one teaching and figuring out what works best for each child. She home schooled her own three children through high school and has tutored other students from elementary school through college. She has worked as a tutor for a nonprofit after school program, an elementary school, a preschool, a library based service for adult literacy and GED prep, and for anyone who has reached out for help. Her life’s motto is “Be available,” and she strongly believes in doing whatever works best for each student to achieve success.

Simone is eager to be back in the Bay Area, working as an EDMO coach after coming home from Massachusetts where she is pursuing a major in Biology and a minor in Education at Mount Holyoke college. Going to a women’s college and participating in varsity cross country and track at the DIII collegiate level has inspired her to empower children to pursue coursework in STEM and pursue athletics as a way to build community, perseverance and have fun outdoors! When Simone isn’t running, she enjoys surfing, hiking, biking, and playing with her younger siblings.

Nina Bouzamondo-Bernstein

Nina has been working with EDMO for the past 4 years! She is currently an undergraduate biology student at the University of California and is working towards medical school. Nina has been tutoring French for 3 years and has been a part of helping children grow for a majority of her life! Nina spent 9 years in band where she rocked out the saxophone, and picked up ukulele along the way. She loves doing yoga and writing modern calligraphy. Nina has a very active lifestyle. Between walking dogs, playing basketball, and going on hikes, she emphasizes self care and finding your passions.

Leah Bartolome

Leah is currently a first year at University of California, Riverside studying biology. She is passionate about teaching because she believes it is very rewarding to help young people enhance their skills and increase their confidence in learning. Leah has been a tutor since her sophomore year in high school and has developed new and fun ways of teaching. She loves working with kids because it is very humbling helping a kid grow into the unique individual they are. In her free time, she lives an active lifestyle playing volleyball and loves to hike. Benji Lenett

Since the age of 12, Benji has worked with EDMO, and has gained a respect and love for both the philosophies of kindness & courage and the transformation of kids able to be in its positive environment. With over seven years of experience with both counseling and tutoring in English and Grammar, Benji is hoping to be able to help facilitate a more focused learning environment in the home (and give parents a well deserved break!). Younger than most Coaches on the site – as a Freshman at Whittier College – Benji will bring youthful energy and positivity to whoever he works with. Benji believes that the best way to connect with kids beyond tutoring a subject is by engaging in their interests, while sharing laughs along the way. Benji hopes that he can serve as a coach and support system beyond homework help as well, all while giving kids another friend in a difficult period of our lives.

Lauren Banchieri

Lauren is so excited to be an EDMO Coach! She is currently a sophomore at Sonoma State University working on her bachelors in liberal studies, minor in early childhood studies, and a multiple subject teaching credential. Lauren comes from a family of teachers (including her mom and several of her aunts), so you could say teaching is in her blood. Lauren was a counselor for EDMO last summer and has worked for an after school program for the last two years. She has lots of experience helping students with homework as well as planning and facilitating fun enrichment activities in a variety of subjects, including math, English, science, and crafts. Lauren believes in leading by example and enjoys supporting her students’ curiosity.

Casey is studying Biomedical Engineering at the University of Nevada Reno and is so excited to be an EDMO Coach! She has been tutoring children, with all sorts of abilities, for over 4 years. Paula Nordstrom Miranda

Paula is someone who truly values diverse interests and passions. As an older sister, she has loved working with kids and helping them learn. She is pursuing a B.A. in English Literature, minor in Global Public Health, and a Pre-Med track at UC Berkeley. Her passions are fighting for equal health opportunities for disadvantaged youth and building relationships with different communities. Ever since she was young, Paula’s mother has always told her that the one thing that no one can take away from is her education. However, children today continue to face various educational barriers and Paula hopes to help ensure equal educational opportunities for everyone. She values all education and loves to teach a wide variety of subjects. She really loves reading, playing with her dogs, and exploring new ways that she can be involved with her community.

Emma is currently completing her Junior year at Occidental College in Los Angeles as an Economics major with a Computer Science minor. After working as an EDMO Maker and Tech Instructor for the past two summers, she is excited to be back on the EDMO team as a coach! Emma loves working with kids to help them foster their passions and become more confident in their skills. In her free time, Emma enjoys hiking, reading, and playing with her dogs.

Maia has spent the past four summers with Camp EDMO, and is very excited to return as an EDMO Coach! She really enjoys working with young people, and has had the opportunity to do so as both a swim teacher and an EDMO camp counselor! To her, there is nothing more rewarding than making a difference in someone’s life through education. Maia believes that with hard work anything is possible, and has brought this belief with her in her life as both a student and a teacher. She has a passion for math, science, and music, and is currently the Assistant Drum Major for her school’s marching band. Maia plays the flute, the oboe, and the alto saxophone, and also conducts music. In her free time Maia enjoys reading, hiking, running, doing her math homework, and searching for good jokes.

Jordyn Brounstein

Jordyn is currently a senior at Washington State University, majoring in Psychology and Human Development. She has been focusing her college education on working with adolescents and better understanding youth development from various academic and theoretical perspectives. Her additional background in social and emotional intelligence has lead her to pursue a career in the educational system, as a guidance counselor or school psychologist, where she can strive to help students reach their goals both academically and in their personal lives. Jordyn has held many leadership positions in her past and she hopes to help and inspire students to become their best selves! In her spare time, Jordyn loves to watch sports and movies with her family and take her dog on walks near her home.

Matthew Bordallo

Matt is so excited to be joining the EDMO family as an EDMO coach. Matt has a B.A. in Psychology and an M.A. in Teaching from the University of San Francisco. He has also worked with 1st, 3rd and 5th graders in many different schools and summer camps throughout San Francisco, and for the past two years with 2nd Graders at Rosa Parks Elementary School in the STEAM pathway. When he’s not with amazing scholars, you can catch Matt watching make up tutorials and creating different looks. A fun fact about Matt is that he is from Guam, which is about 6000 miles away from San Francisco!

Luis Lupercio

Luis is a musician and educator in the Sacramento area who loves to make music and learn new things. Luis holds a BA in music from Sacramento State, as well as a preliminary teaching credential. Luis is currently working toward his master’s in teaching with an expected graduation of May 2021. Luis is fluent in English, Spanish and music! When Luis is not working, he can be found making music, on a hike or in the kitchen cooking food!

Victoria Schmidt

Victoria is currently attending school to obtain her MS in School Counseling from Capella University. She also has her BA in Psychology from San Jose State University. Victoria has a passion for working with children and hopes to one day become a school counselor for an elementary school. She believes in building a relationship and rapport with students, being a mentor, and someone children can talk to in a time of need. Victoria has been working with children for over 6 years! She originally worked for and ran an after school program for TK-5th graders and is currently working for a daycare/preschool with 6 week-4 year olds. She also was a camp director for Camp EDMO!

Meghan Justice

Meghan has always looked at education as a foundation for creating greatness and strongly advocates for there to be creative and emotional education as well. Her passion and caring for all students was the impetus for Meghan’s decision to work in education, even assisting preschool – adult students when she was a student herself. Meghan earned her BS in Business Administration and has continued to use these skills to develop effective lesson plans and work in team leadership. She also has her TEFL certificate and has traveled overseas to teach English in both Palestine and Mexico. Meghan is currently working with Connecting Waters Charter School to teach homeschool students in a wide range of subjects.

In her free time Meghan enjoys painting, reading, yoga, hiking, and playing board games. As the weather gets warmer Meghan loves to go camping and spending time creating in nature.

Laius McCormick

Schedule Session

Laius stands for love and equality, and advocates for students’ voice and choice in decision-making. Her devotion to serve youth and adults in Alameda county comes with 25+ years of experience from multiple spaces; starting at the age of 13 when she became a Counselor-in-training (CIT) for Arts Camp with the city of Oakland. She continued her passion by assisting adults with disabilities to live independently. She also became part of a non-profit that specializes in comprehensive after school programming where she began as a parent volunteer and moved her way up to Programmatic Director.

Currently, Laius is a Site Coordinator for an after school program. She has certifications in Human Development and Paraprofessional Educator services. Laius believes that education is a doorway and is committed to making sure she impacts students’ lives with fullness in their mind, body and spirit.

Brenda has a B.A. in Mathematics with a Teaching Concentration from UC Berkeley. She loves working with youth and has been working in the education field for about eight years. She believes that education is extremely important and can change your life. Brenda wants to become a high school math teacher. Lucy graduated from the University of San Francisco with a degree in Sociology and a concentration in Education. She is currently working on earning her Masters in Education and teaching credentials. She has dreamed about teaching and working with youth since she was 14 years old and is incredibly passionate about the field. Originally from South Central Los Angeles, Lucy considers San Francisco her home and has fallen in love with the Mission District.

Daija Bell is a returning staff at the famous Oakland Camp Edmo. She is currently a student at Sonoma State University studying Psychology, in hopes of being a children’s counselor in the future. She is very excited to work with youth and witness them expand their knowledge and master new skills. Daija loves to help others achieve their goals and believes that everything is easier (and more fun) when working together as a team.

Hannah Hoagland

Hannah has a BA from Sonoma State University in Early Childhood Studies, as well as a MA from San Jose State University in Curriculum and Instruction with a Multiple Subject Credential. Education has always been one of her biggest passions and she’s excited to have her own classroom by next Fall! In the meantime, Hannah is excited to start tutoring, coaching and mentoring with EDMO! Hannah has workedd with EDMO for a little over a year and has fallen in love with The EDMO Method and is deeply aligned with EDMO’s mission to foster an environment for kind, curious and courageous humans. In her free time, Hannah likes to paint mostly watercolors, but she also loves learning new techniques with various other mediums. Shannon is currently completing a Masters in Education at Loyola Marymount University where she has been on the rowing team for the past four years. As an undergraduate, Shannon studied and got her degree in Political Science. She has also mentored and tutored kids at her local family center. Mariel Goldberg

Mariel grew up in San Francisco and graduated from Lowell High School in 2019. She is currently a freshman at Kenyon College, where she is studying Economics and Statistics. She plans on attending graduate school after she graduates from Kenyon College. She is interested in finance, and also enjoys pottery, knitting and swimming.

Akeiylah DeWitt

Akeiylah believes that all educators are responsible for being respectful and mindful of every student’s individual experience, and modifying their teaching strategy to make learning accessible for all. She is excited to join Camp Edmo for another summer to enrich the learning experiences happening online. Akeiylah is particularly looking forward to inspiring students to adopt a growth mindset and cultivate their skills related to their favorite subjects and hobbies! Akeiylah is working on her Ph.D. in Human-Centered Design and Engineering, where she studies how to empower parents to track their children’s developmental progress. She starts her research by engaging families to hear their needs and design technologies with those needs at the center. In her free time, Akeiylah finds ways to entertain her younger sisters while sheltering-in-place. Cooperative board games are their current favorite!

Simone is eager to be back in the Bay Area, working as an EDMO coach after coming home from Massachusetts where she is pursuing a major in Biology and a minor in Education at Mount Holyoke college. Since the age of 12, Benji has worked with EDMO, and has gained a respect and love for both the philosophies of kindness & courage and the transformation of kids able to be in its positive environment. With over seven years of experience with both counseling and tutoring in English and Grammar, Benji is hoping to be able to help facilitate a more focused learning environment in the home (and give parents a well deserved break!). Younger than most Coaches on the site – as a Freshman at Whittier College – Benji will bring youthful energy and positivity to whoever he works with. Benji believes that the best way to connect with kids beyond tutoring a subject is by engaging in their interests, while sharing laughs along the way. Benji hopes that he can serve as a coach and support system beyond homework help as well, all while giving kids another friend in a difficult period of our lives.

Emma is currently completing her Junior year at Occidental College in Los Angeles as an Economics major with a Computer Science minor. After working as an EDMO Maker and Tech Instructor for the past two summers, she is excited to be back on the EDMO team as a coach! Emma loves working with kids to help them foster their passions and become more confident in their skills. In her free time, Emma enjoys hiking, reading, and playing with her dogs.

Maia has spent the past four summers with Camp EDMO, and is very excited to return as an EDMO Coach! She really enjoys working with young people, and has had the opportunity to do so as both a swim teacher and an EDMO camp counselor! To her, there is nothing more rewarding than making a difference in someone’s life through education. Maia believes that with hard work anything is possible, and has brought this belief with her in her life as both a student and a teacher. She has a passion for math, science, and music, and is currently the Assistant Drum Major for her school’s marching band. Maia plays the flute, the oboe, and the alto saxophone, and also conducts music. In her free time Maia enjoys reading, hiking, running, doing her math homework, and searching for good jokes.

Jordyn is currently a senior at Washington State University, majoring in Psychology and Human Development. She has been focusing her college education on working with adolescents and better understanding youth development from various academic and theoretical perspectives. Her additional background in social and emotional intelligence has lead her to pursue a career in the educational system, as a guidance counselor or school psychologist, where she can strive to help students reach their goals both academically and in their personal lives. Jordyn has held many leadership positions in her past and she hopes to help and inspire students to become their best selves! Matt is so excited to be joining the EDMO family as an EDMO coach. Matt has a B.A. in Psychology and an M.A. in Teaching from the University of San Francisco. He has also worked with 1st, 3rd and 5th graders in many different schools and summer camps throughout San Francisco, and for the past two years with 2nd Graders at Rosa Parks Elementary School in the STEAM pathway. When he’s not with amazing scholars, you can catch Matt watching make up tutorials and creating different looks. A fun fact about Matt is that he is from Guam, which is about 6000 miles away from San Francisco!

Luis is a musician and educator in the Sacramento area who loves to make music and learn new things. Luis holds a BA in music from Sacramento State, as well as a preliminary teaching credential. Luis is currently working toward his master’s in teaching with an expected graduation of May 2021. Luis is fluent in English, Spanish and music! When Luis is not working, he can be found making music, on a hike or in the kitchen cooking food!

Meghan Justice

Meghan has always looked at education as a foundation for creating greatness and strongly advocates for there to be creative and emotional education as well. Her passion and caring for all students was the impetus for Meghan’s decision to work in education, even assisting preschool – adult students when she was a student herself. Meghan earned her BS in Business Administration and has continued to use these skills to develop effective lesson plans and work in team leadership. She also has her TEFL certificate and has traveled overseas to teach English in both Palestine and Mexico. Meghan is currently working with Connecting Waters Charter School to teach homeschool students in a wide range of subjects.

In her free time Meghan enjoys painting, reading, yoga, hiking, and playing board games. As the weather gets warmer Meghan loves to go camping and spending time creating in nature.

Vannary Jim

Vannary Jim, a Cambodian Queen by birthright from the Inland Empire, the oldest of seven and the first to attend college in her family, she stands for truth and love for all. She has been involved in youth development, access and retention, as well as restorative spaces for 11+ years. She started as a resource counselor for low-income, first-generation, students of color and since then, has continued to grow and serve her community. Currently, her focus is on behavioral health with an emphasis on learning communities, specifically boys/girls group between 2nd-5th grade, around social-emotional learning. She takes pride in the work she does for her students because she believes in the stories our children carry and she will hold space for their stories because they matter. A quote she embraces is, “For things to reveal themselves to us, we need to be ready to abandon our views about them (Thich Nhat Hanh).” This quote is her motivation to keep love in the center of her well-being so that it gives people permission to open up on their own time.

Homework is crucial to helping students review and make sense of their own learning throughout the school day. In each session, students will receive 1:1 assistance and support with homework in each subject area. Our coaches are prepared to support students in literacy, math or any subject area where homework is given. Support can vary based on grade levels and homework given to students.

Akeiylah believes that all educators are responsible for being respectful and mindful of every student’s individual experience, and modifying their teaching strategy to make learning accessible for all. She is excited to join Camp Edmo for another summer to enrich the learning experiences happening online. Akeiylah is particularly looking forward to inspiring students to adopt a growth mindset and cultivate their skills related to their favorite subjects and hobbies! Akeiylah is working on her Ph.D. in Human-Centered Design and Engineering, where she studies how to empower parents to track their children’s developmental progress. She starts her research by engaging families to hear their needs and design technologies with those needs at the center. In her free time, Akeiylah finds ways to entertain her younger sisters while sheltering-in-place. Cooperative board games are their current favorite!

He has spent the past two summers at EDMO’s Alameda site, most recently as a Pro Maker Instructor, but his dedication to working with students began early on as the founder of a local mentoring program. Ken’s passion is guiding students along their quest in discovering their inner genius by leveraging their strengths and interests. Sydney has been with Camp EDMO for over 12 years –– as a camper for seven, then a leader-in-training, counselor, and now… an EDMO Coach! She is currently a rising sophomore at UC Berkeley, with an intended major in Media Studies and minors in Journalism and Spanish. Aside from her passions for working with children, writing, and language, Sydney is an avid traveler, volleyball player, artist, and tutor. In fact, when she’s not editing her friends’ essays or leading repeat-after-me songs at summer camp, you’ll likely find Sydney at JoAnn’s Fabrics, passing a volleyball around, or planning her next trip abroad. Though learning can surely be difficult sometimes, Sydney hopes to inspire the same enthusiasm in kids for education and trying new things that she too developed at EDMO.

Valeria is currently majoring in Computer Science at San Francisco State University. As the oldest in her family, she has always been the source of entertainment for her younger siblings and cousins. Nina has been working with EDMO for the past 4 years! She is currently an undergraduate biology student at the University of California and is working towards medical school. Nina has been tutoring French for 3 years and has been a part of helping children grow for a majority of her life! Jazmin Beckman

Jazmin recently earned her BA in Biological Sciences with a minor in Dance from California State University, Sacramento. She is currently pursuing her MA in Teaching with a Single Subject Science Credential to pursue a career in teaching high school Biology and Chemistry. Jazmin has worked in the field of education since 2016, starting out as a tutor and has since taken positions as a noon duty aid, instructional para educator for special education, after school team leader, instructor, and substitute teacher. She also spent last summer at Camp EDMO working as a Pro Maker Instructor. Her passion for her students and education has driven her to pursue a teaching career to inspire as many students as possible to become interested in the arts and sciences. As a first-time parent, Jazmin recently has also become actively involved in the Early Childhood Education program at San Juan Unified since welcoming her son into the world in October of 2019, who is a participant of this program. Her belief is that it is never too early to start your education, and it is never too late to finish your education.

With over seven years of experience with both counseling and tutoring in English and Grammar, Benji is hoping to be able to help facilitate a more focused learning environment in the home (and give parents a well deserved break!). Younger than most Coaches on the site – as a Freshman at Whittier College – Benji will bring youthful energy and positivity to whoever he works with. Benji believes that the best way to connect with kids beyond tutoring a subject is by engaging in their interests, while sharing laughs along the way. Lauren is so excited to be an EDMO Coach! She is currently a sophomore at Sonoma State University working on her bachelors in liberal studies, minor in early childhood studies, and a multiple subject teaching credential. Lauren comes from a family of teachers (including her mom and several of her aunts), so you could say teaching is in her blood. Lauren was a counselor for EDMO last summer and has worked for an after school program for the last two years. She has lots of experience helping students with homework as well as planning and facilitating fun enrichment activities in a variety of subjects, including math, English, science, and crafts. Paula is someone who truly values diverse interests and passions. As an older sister, she has loved working with kids and helping them learn. She is pursuing a B.A. in English Literature, minor in Global Public Health, and a Pre-Med track at UC Berkeley. Her passions are fighting for equal health opportunities for disadvantaged youth and building relationships with different communities. Ever since she was young, Paula’s mother has always told her that the one thing that no one can take away from is her education. However, children today continue to face various educational barriers and Paula hopes to help ensure equal educational opportunities for everyone. Emma is currently completing her Junior year at Occidental College in Los Angeles as an Economics major with a Computer Science minor. After working as an EDMO Maker and Tech Instructor for the past two summers, she is excited to be back on the EDMO team as a coach! Maia has spent the past four summers with Camp EDMO, and is very excited to return as an EDMO Coach! She really enjoys working with young people, and has had the opportunity to do so as both a swim teacher and an EDMO camp counselor! Maia believes that with hard work anything is possible, and has brought this belief with her in her life as both a student and a teacher. She has a passion for math, science, and music, and is currently the Assistant Drum Major for her school’s marching band. Matthew Bordallo

Matt is so excited to be joining the EDMO family as an EDMO coach. Matt has a B.A. in Psychology and an M.A. in Teaching from the University of San Francisco. He has also worked with 1st, 3rd and 5th graders in many different schools and summer camps throughout San Francisco, and for the past two years with 2nd Graders at Rosa Parks Elementary School in the STEAM pathway. Luis is a musician and educator in the Sacramento area who loves to make music and learn new things. Luis holds a BA in music from Sacramento State, as well as a preliminary teaching credential. Victoria is currently attending school to obtain her MS in School Counseling from Capella University. She also has her BA in Psychology from San Jose State University. Victoria has a passion for working with children and hopes to one day become a school counselor for an elementary school. Meghan has always looked at education as a foundation for creating greatness and strongly advocates for there to be creative and emotional education as well. Her passion and caring for all students was the impetus for Meghan’s decision to work in education, even assisting preschool – adult students when she was a student herself. Meghan earned her BS in Business Administration and has continued to use these skills to develop effective lesson plans and work in team leadership. She also has her TEFL certificate and has traveled overseas to teach English in both Palestine and Mexico. Meghan is currently working with Connecting Waters Charter School to teach homeschool students in a wide range of subjects.

In her free time Meghan enjoys painting, reading, yoga, hiking, and playing board games. As the weather gets warmer Meghan loves to go camping and spending time creating in nature.

Laius stands for love and equality, and advocates for students’ voice and choice in decision-making. Her devotion to serve youth and adults in Alameda county comes with 25+ years of experience from multiple spaces; starting at the age of 13 when she became a Counselor-in-training (CIT) for Arts Camp with the city of Oakland. She continued her passion by assisting adults with disabilities to live independently. She also became part of a non-profit that specializes in comprehensive after school programming where she began as a parent volunteer and moved her way up to Programmatic Director.

Currently, Laius is a Site Coordinator for an after school program. She has certifications in Human Development and Paraprofessional Educator services. Laius believes that education is a doorway and is committed to making sure she impacts students’ lives with fullness in their mind, body and spirit.

Lucy graduated from the University of San Francisco with a degree in Sociology and a concentration in Education. She is currently working on earning her Masters in Education and teaching credentials. Originally from South Central Los Angeles, Lucy considers San Francisco her home and has fallen in love with the Mission District.

Daija Bell is a returning staff at the famous Oakland Camp Edmo. She is currently a student at Sonoma State University studying Psychology, in hopes of being a children’s counselor in the future. She is very excited to work with youth and witness them expand their knowledge and master new skills. Hannah has a BA from Sonoma State University in Early Childhood Studies, as well as a MA from San Jose State University in Curriculum and Instruction with a Multiple Subject Credential. General Math (5th-8th)

In each session, students will receive 1:1 help with grade level appropriate math skills and strategies. Students will explore math concepts like multiplication, division and fractions with support from their coach and through their own questioning.

He has been playing music for over twenty years and teaching music for half a decade in both classroom settings and individual instruction. Robert also has experience in teaching academic subjects in a variety of topics including math, writing, history, and biology. Akeiylah believes that all educators are responsible for being respectful and mindful of every student’s individual experience, and modifying their teaching strategy to make learning accessible for all. She is excited to join Camp Edmo for another summer to enrich the learning experiences happening online. Akeiylah is particularly looking forward to inspiring students to adopt a growth mindset and cultivate their skills related to their favorite subjects and hobbies! Akeiylah is working on her Ph.D. in Human-Centered Design and Engineering, where she studies how to empower parents to track their children’s developmental progress. She starts her research by engaging families to hear their needs and design technologies with those needs at the center. In her free time, Akeiylah finds ways to entertain her younger sisters while sheltering-in-place. Cooperative board games are their current favorite!

Ken is thrilled to have the opportunity to inspire and challenge young minds while rocking the EDMO vibe! He is currently a sapling among the trees at Stanford University who hopes to one day grow into a (tall) civil engineer and city planner. On the side, he serves as the news director at campus radio station KZSU 90.1FM. He has spent the past two summers at EDMO’s Alameda site, most recently as a Pro Maker Instructor, but his dedication to working with students began early on as the founder of a local mentoring program. Ken’s passion is guiding students along their quest in discovering their inner genius by leveraging their strengths and interests. You can often catch Ken in his natural habitat on board a city bus, or on the air talking about the news and interviewing fascinating people!

Sydney has been with Camp EDMO for over 12 years –– as a camper for seven, then a leader-in-training, counselor, and now… an EDMO Coach! She is currently a rising sophomore at UC Berkeley, with an intended major in Media Studies and minors in Journalism and Spanish. Aside from her passions for working with children, writing, and language, Sydney is an avid traveler, volleyball player, artist, and tutor. In fact, when she’s not editing her friends’ essays or leading repeat-after-me songs at summer camp, you’ll likely find Sydney at JoAnn’s Fabrics, passing a volleyball around, or planning her next trip abroad. Tina Barrentine’s favorite sound in the whole world is “Aha!” when a concept finally clicks in the mind of a child. She loves one-on-one teaching and figuring out what works best for each child. She home schooled her own three children through high school and has tutored other students from elementary school through college. She has worked as a tutor for a nonprofit after school program, an elementary school, a preschool, a library based service for adult literacy and GED prep, and for anyone who has reached out for help. Jazmin recently earned her BA in Biological Sciences with a minor in Dance from California State University, Sacramento. She is currently pursuing her MA in Teaching with a Single Subject Science Credential to pursue a career in teaching high school Biology and Chemistry. Jazmin has worked in the field of education since 2016, starting out as a tutor and has since taken positions as a noon duty aid, instructional para educator for special education, after school team leader, instructor, and substitute teacher. She also spent last summer at Camp EDMO working as a Pro Maker Instructor. Her passion for her students and education has driven her to pursue a teaching career to inspire as many students as possible to become interested in the arts and sciences. As a first-time parent, Jazmin recently has also become actively involved in the Early Childhood Education program at San Juan Unified since welcoming her son into the world in October of 2019, who is a participant of this program. Nicole earns a sense of satisfaction when she breaks down a difficult math concept in order for someone else to understand. She understands the difficulty behind the subject and strives for others to see her passion for mathematics and how it applies to real-life situations. Vannary Jim, a Cambodian Queen by birthright from the Inland Empire, the oldest of seven and the first to attend college in her family, she stands for truth and love for all. She has been involved in youth development, access and retention, as well as restorative spaces for 11+ years. Akeiylah believes that all educators are responsible for being respectful and mindful of every student’s individual experience, and modifying their teaching strategy to make learning accessible for all. Akeiylah is particularly looking forward to inspiring students to adopt a growth mindset and cultivate their skills related to their favorite subjects and hobbies! Akeiylah is working on her Ph.D. in Human-Centered Design and Engineering, where she studies how to empower parents to track their children’s developmental progress. Ken is thrilled to have the opportunity to inspire and challenge young minds while rocking the EDMO vibe! He is currently a sapling among the trees at Stanford University who hopes to one day grow into a (tall) civil engineer and city planner. On the side, he serves as the news director at campus radio station KZSU 90.1FM. He has spent the past two summers at EDMO’s Alameda site, most recently as a Pro Maker Instructor, but his dedication to working with students began early on as the founder of a local mentoring program. Ken’s passion is guiding students along their quest in discovering their inner genius by leveraging their strengths and interests. You can often catch Ken in his natural habitat on board a city bus, or on the air talking about the news and interviewing fascinating people!

Sydney has been with Camp EDMO for over 12 years –– as a camper for seven, then a leader-in-training, counselor, and now… an EDMO Coach! She is currently a rising sophomore at UC Berkeley, with an intended major in Media Studies and minors in Journalism and Spanish. Aside from her passions for working with children, writing, and language, Sydney is an avid traveler, volleyball player, artist, and tutor. In fact, when she’s not editing her friends’ essays or leading repeat-after-me songs at summer camp, you’ll likely find Sydney at JoAnn’s Fabrics, passing a volleyball around, or planning her next trip abroad. Though learning can surely be difficult sometimes, Sydney hopes to inspire the same enthusiasm in kids for education and trying new things that she too developed at EDMO.

Chris is a credentialed teacher with experience in teaching 8th, 4th, and 1st grade! He is currently teaching 4th grade and strongly believes in working with students to not only build their academic skills but their social-emotional skills as well. Tina Barrentine’s favorite sound in the whole world is “Aha!” when a concept finally clicks in the mind of a child. She loves one-on-one teaching and figuring out what works best for each child. She home schooled her own three children through high school and has tutored other students from elementary school through college. She has worked as a tutor for a nonprofit after school program, an elementary school, a preschool, a library based service for adult literacy and GED prep, and for anyone who has reached out for help. Jazmin recently earned her BA in Biological Sciences with a minor in Dance from California State University, Sacramento. She is currently pursuing her MA in Teaching with a Single Subject Science Credential to pursue a career in teaching high school Biology and Chemistry. Jazmin has worked in the field of education since 2016, starting out as a tutor and has since taken positions as a noon duty aid, instructional para educator for special education, after school team leader, instructor, and substitute teacher. She also spent last summer at Camp EDMO working as a Pro Maker Instructor. Her passion for her students and education has driven her to pursue a teaching career to inspire as many students as possible to become interested in the arts and sciences. As a first-time parent, Jazmin recently has also become actively involved in the Early Childhood Education program at San Juan Unified since welcoming her son into the world in October of 2019, who is a participant of this program. Her belief is that it is never too early to start your education, and it is never too late to finish your education.

Since the age of 12, Benji has worked with EDMO, and has gained a respect and love for both the philosophies of kindness & courage and the transformation of kids able to be in its positive environment. With over seven years of experience with both counseling and tutoring in English and Grammar, Benji is hoping to be able to help facilitate a more focused learning environment in the home (and give parents a well deserved break!). Younger than most Coaches on the site – as a Freshman at Whittier College – Benji will bring youthful energy and positivity to whoever he works with. Benji believes that the best way to connect with kids beyond tutoring a subject is by engaging in their interests, while sharing laughs along the way. Nicole earns a sense of satisfaction when she breaks down a difficult math concept in order for someone else to understand. She understands the difficulty behind the subject and strives for others to see her passion for mathematics and how it applies to real-life situations. She likes to work with kids because the connections that she makes with them are the highlight of her day. When she works with kids, she sees their potential to succeed in a subject and wants to find ways to help motivate and challenge them in order to further their learning. She is currently a second-year Mathematics major at the University of California, Irvine and is working towards a concentration in Mathematics for Education with a Secondary Teaching Certificate. Her hobbies include traveling, photography, and trying new restaurants.

She really enjoys working with young people, and has had the opportunity to do so as both a swim teacher and an EDMO camp counselor! Maia believes that with hard work anything is possible, and has brought this belief with her in her life as both a student and a teacher. She has a passion for math, science, and music, and is currently the Assistant Drum Major for her school’s marching band. Meghan has always looked at education as a foundation for creating greatness and strongly advocates for there to be creative and emotional education as well. Her passion and caring for all students was the impetus for Meghan’s decision to work in education, even assisting preschool – adult students when she was a student herself. Meghan earned her BS in Business Administration and has continued to use these skills to develop effective lesson plans and work in team leadership. She also has her TEFL certificate and has traveled overseas to teach English in both Palestine and Mexico. Meghan is currently working with Connecting Waters Charter School to teach homeschool students in a wide range of subjects.

Nina has been working with EDMO for the past 4 years! She is currently an undergraduate biology student at the University of California and is working towards medical school. Jazmin recently earned her BA in Biological Sciences with a minor in Dance from California State University, Sacramento. She is currently pursuing her MA in Teaching with a Single Subject Science Credential to pursue a career in teaching high school Biology and Chemistry. Jazmin has worked in the field of education since 2016, starting out as a tutor and has since taken positions as a noon duty aid, instructional para educator for special education, after school team leader, instructor, and substitute teacher. She also spent last summer at Camp EDMO working as a Pro Maker Instructor. Her passion for her students and education has driven her to pursue a teaching career to inspire as many students as possible to become interested in the arts and sciences. As a first-time parent, Jazmin recently has also become actively involved in the Early Childhood Education program at San Juan Unified since welcoming her son into the world in October of 2019, who is a participant of this program. Her belief is that it is never too early to start your education, and it is never too late to finish your education.

Leah is currently a first year at University of California, Riverside studying biology. She is passionate about teaching because she believes it is very rewarding to help young people enhance their skills and increase their confidence in learning. Leah has been a tutor since her sophomore year in high school and has developed new and fun ways of teaching. Paula is someone who truly values diverse interests and passions. As an older sister, she has loved working with kids and helping them learn. She is pursuing a B.A. in English Literature, minor in Global Public Health, and a Pre-Med track at UC Berkeley. Her passions are fighting for equal health opportunities for disadvantaged youth and building relationships with different communities. Ever since she was young, Paula’s mother has always told her that the one thing that no one can take away from is her education. However, children today continue to face various educational barriers and Paula hopes to help ensure equal educational opportunities for everyone. She values all education and loves to teach a wide variety of subjects. She really loves reading, playing with her dogs, and exploring new ways that she can be involved with her community.

Emma is currently completing her Junior year at Occidental College in Los Angeles as an Economics major with a Computer Science minor. After working as an EDMO Maker and Tech Instructor for the past two summers, she is excited to be back on the EDMO team as a coach! Nicole Louie

Nicole earns a sense of satisfaction when she breaks down a difficult math concept in order for someone else to understand. She understands the difficulty behind the subject and strives for others to see her passion for mathematics and how it applies to real-life situations. She likes to work with kids because the connections that she makes with them are the highlight of her day. When she works with kids, she sees their potential to succeed in a subject and wants to find ways to help motivate and challenge them in order to further their learning. She is currently a second-year Mathematics major at the University of California, Irvine and is working towards a concentration in Mathematics for Education with a Secondary Teaching Certificate. Her hobbies include traveling, photography, and trying new restaurants.

Maia has spent the past four summers with Camp EDMO, and is very excited to return as an EDMO Coach! She really enjoys working with young people, and has had the opportunity to do so as both a swim teacher and an EDMO camp counselor! To her, there is nothing more rewarding than making a difference in someone’s life through education. Maia believes that with hard work anything is possible, and has brought this belief with her in her life as both a student and a teacher. She has a passion for math, science, and music, and is currently the Assistant Drum Major for her school’s marching band. Maia plays the flute, the oboe, and the alto saxophone, and also conducts music. In her free time Maia enjoys reading, hiking, running, doing her math homework, and searching for good jokes.

She has been focusing her college education on working with adolescents and better understanding youth development from various academic and theoretical perspectives. Luis Lupercio

Luis is a musician and educator in the Sacramento area who loves to make music and learn new things. Luis holds a BA in music from Sacramento State, as well as a preliminary teaching credential. Luis is currently working toward his master’s in teaching with an expected graduation of May 2021. Luis is fluent in English, Spanish and music! When Luis is not working, he can be found making music, on a hike or in the kitchen cooking food!

Meghan Justice

Meghan has always looked at education as a foundation for creating greatness and strongly advocates for there to be creative and emotional education as well. Her passion and caring for all students was the impetus for Meghan’s decision to work in education, even assisting preschool – adult students when she was a student herself. Meghan earned her BS in Business Administration and has continued to use these skills to develop effective lesson plans and work in team leadership. She also has her TEFL certificate and has traveled overseas to teach English in both Palestine and Mexico. Meghan is currently working with Connecting Waters Charter School to teach homeschool students in a wide range of subjects.

In her free time Meghan enjoys painting, reading, yoga, hiking, and playing board games. As the weather gets warmer Meghan loves to go camping and spending time creating in nature.

Brenda Berumen

Brenda has a B.A. in Mathematics with a Teaching Concentration from UC Berkeley. She loves working with youth and has been working in the education field for about eight years. Brenda is currently working as an after school program instructor and a kindergarten aid at an elementary school in Oakland. She believes that education is extremely important and can change your life. Brenda wants to become a high school math teacher. Her purpose in life is to be a part of kids’ learning experiences and make math easier to understand, less scary and more fun.

Lucy Rodriguez

Lucy graduated from the University of San Francisco with a degree in Sociology and a concentration in Education. She is currently working on earning her Masters in Education and teaching credentials. She has dreamed about teaching and working with youth since she was 14 years old and is incredibly passionate about the field. Originally from South Central Los Angeles, Lucy considers San Francisco her home and has fallen in love with the Mission District.

Hannah Hoagland

Hannah has a BA from Sonoma State University in Early Childhood Studies, as well as a MA from San Jose State University in Curriculum and Instruction with a Multiple Subject Credential. Education has always been one of her biggest passions and she’s excited to have her own classroom by next Fall! In the meantime, Hannah is excited to start tutoring, coaching and mentoring with EDMO! Hannah has workedd with EDMO for a little over a year and has fallen in love with The EDMO Method and is deeply aligned with EDMO’s mission to foster an environment for kind, curious and courageous humans. In her free time, Hannah likes to paint mostly watercolors, but she also loves learning new techniques with various other mediums. She also likes incorporating fitness into her schedule as much as possible! Hannah is adventurous, artistic and loves a good cup of coffee!

Advanced Algebra

In Advanced Algebra, students will dig deeper into the study of Algebra. They will explore larger concepts regarding logarithms, exponents and rational/radical relationships. Their coach will provide support on specific concepts covered in their schoolwork.

Robert Sanlis

Robert is very excited to be joining the EDMO Coach Team! He earned two degrees from UCSB and has an extensive professional background in education with a specialty in music education. He has been playing music for over twenty years and teaching music for half a decade in both classroom settings and individual instruction. He believes that music education provides children with tools they can use to better understand their emotions and world around them. Robert also has experience in teaching academic subjects in a variety of topics including math, writing, history, and biology. Akeiylah believes that all educators are responsible for being respectful and mindful of every student’s individual experience, and modifying their teaching strategy to make learning accessible for all. She is excited to join Camp Edmo for another summer to enrich the learning experiences happening online. Akeiylah is particularly looking forward to inspiring students to adopt a growth mindset and cultivate their skills related to their favorite subjects and hobbies! Akeiylah is working on her Ph.D. in Human-Centered Design and Engineering, where she studies how to empower parents to track their children’s developmental progress. Harrison Segal

Outside of school Harrison spends his time rock climbing, taking photos, and reading. He has a been an EDMO camper, leader-in-training, and instructor over the last 12+ years. But now Harrison is excited to share his passion for learning as an EDMO Coach!

Ken is thrilled to have the opportunity to inspire and challenge young minds while rocking the EDMO vibe! He is currently a sapling among the trees at Stanford University who hopes to one day grow into a (tall) civil engineer and city planner. On the side, he serves as the news director at campus radio station KZSU 90.1FM. He has spent the past two summers at EDMO’s Alameda site, most recently as a Pro Maker Instructor, but his dedication to working with students began early on as the founder of a local mentoring program. Ken’s passion is guiding students along their quest in discovering their inner genius by leveraging their strengths and interests. You can often catch Ken in his natural habitat on board a city bus, or on the air talking about the news and interviewing fascinating people!

Geometry is the study of shapes, lines, angles and solids. Students will explore calculating complex area and parameter as well as translations, reflections, and rotations. Their coach will provide support on specific concepts covered in their schoolwork.

Rafael Garduño Acolt

Rafael is pursuing a B.A. in Natural and Computational Sciences at Minerva Schools at KGI. Originally from Mexico, Rafa has lived in four different countries for the last two years (Mexico, U.S., South Korea, and India), which has taught him the power and importance of diversity and community. He worked as an instructor last year and is very happy to come back as an EDMO coach this summer! Rafa is passionate about science and technology and loves sharing this passion with others through teaching and learning. He believes curiosity can make the world a kinder and better place, and cannot wait to help kids question and learn new things during and after each one of his sessions.
