  • OUSD/OFCY HUB Camp Program

In 2014, the Oakland Unified School District put out an RFP for “A+B” model summer partners to be funded with 21st Century grant funding at designated “HUB schools”. Students would attend four weeks of district summer school in the morning (A) and then participate in an enrichment program in the afternoon (B). The intention of this model was to 1) reduce effects of Summer Learning Loss by providing students with a 9am-3pm program for four weeks, a total of 120 hours of enrichment per summer and 2) leverage the resources of the district and expertise of community agencies. Edventure More’s Camp EDMO was selected as a partner based on its award-winning, experiential science, maker, tech and recreation curriculum and its embedded Social Emotional Learning activities.

Camp EDMO received a $29,640 grant for the initial Summer 2014 program to serve 80 kids at one HUB site. In 2016, after two successful years, the program was award was raised to $112,320 in order to expand the program to serve 120 kids at three HUB school sites for five weeks. Springboard Collaborative, an intensive reading program, was added as the morning partner to replace the district summer school. In addition, Edventure More applied for, and was awarded, $50,000 by the Oakland Fund for Children & Youth to provide a sixth week of full-day Camp EDMO for the campers at the three sites.

“Thanks to Camp Edmo, "My child is much more social and outgoing at school. I believe her summers at Edmo encourage her to not engage with others better, but also share her knowledge with others."”
